The single most important rule after a facial is simple: keep your skin calm for 24 to 48 hours. That means no sun, no heavy sweating, no hot water blasting your face, and no strong actives. My facial treatments are designed to deeply clean, nourish, and bring back that healthy glow, but the aftercare is what protects your results once you step back out into Walnut Creek’s sunshine and dry air.
If you’re a busy professional or parent, I get it. You want clear steps you can actually follow without adding time to your day. This guide is exactly that, plus a few notes for deeper treatments where the rules need to be stricter.
Your 0 to 48 hour facial aftercare plan (do this, skip that)
Right after your facial, your skin is usually a little more reactive because I’ve just exfoliated, extracted, and hydrated it. So I keep aftercare very clean and very boring for the first two days. That’s how you hold onto the glow instead of accidentally irritating your barrier.
48-hour basics: gentle cleanse, hydrate, mineral SPF. Avoid heat, sweat, sun, makeup, and strong actives.
Do this the day of your facial
- Keep it clean: If you need to wash, use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Pat dry, don’t scrub.
- Hydrate: A simple hydrating serum and a barrier-friendly moisturizer are perfect.
- Wear mineral SPF the next morning: Walnut Creek has plenty of bright days, even when it feels cool out.
Skip this for 24 to 48 hours
- Makeup: especially heavy foundation. If you absolutely must wear something, keep it minimal and clean, and let me know what you used at your follow-up.
- Workouts and heavy sweating: I generally recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before intense exercise. Sweat and heat can trigger redness and congestion.
- Hot showers, steam rooms, saunas: heat is not your friend right after exfoliation.
- Pools and hot tubs: give your skin time to settle before you expose it to chlorine and heat.
- Strong products: retinol, AHA/BHA acids, exfoliating scrubs, strong acne spot treatments, and fragranced products.
If you’re coming to see me in Downtown Walnut Creek, I’ll always tell you if your specific service needs stricter rules. Deeper treatments like peels or microchanneling usually need a longer “hands off” window than a classic hydrating facial.
Days 3 to 7: keep the glow, avoid the “why am I breaking out?” moment
This is the week where people often slip and undo what we just worked for. Your skin might look amazing, so you throw everything back on it. Then you get stinging, bumps, or dryness and wonder what happened. Most of the time it’s just too much, too soon.
What I want you doing all week
- Daily mineral SPF: Walnut Creek sun is sneaky, and UV can trigger pigmentation fast after exfoliation.
- Hydration morning and night: think serum plus moisturizer, especially in cooler, drier months.
- Hands off: no picking at flaking skin or “one last squeeze.” Let it heal.
What to hold back until I give you the green light
- Retinoids and strong acids: usually wait at least several days, sometimes longer after peels or microchanneling.
- New products: the week after a facial is not the time to test something random you found online.
- Aggressive exfoliation: scrubs, cleansing brushes, and rough washcloths can cause irritation and prolong redness.
One of my microchanneling clients told me their treatment was comfortable, and they only had mild redness that faded within a day. That’s what we aim for. Calm skin heals faster and looks better.
Post-facial skincare that actually protects results (by skin type)
You don’t need a 10-step routine after a facial. You need the right basics, done consistently. Here’s what I generally recommend for post-facial skincare, then I’ll adjust it based on what we did and how your skin behaves.
Sensitive or easily irritated
Gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid is a solid choice). Barrier moisturizer with ceramides. Mineral SPF in the morning.
Oily or acne-prone
Light gel cleanser, then hydration (yes, still). Choose a non-greasy moisturizer and mineral SPF. Hold acne actives for a couple days unless I tell you otherwise, since irritation can look like “more acne.”
Aging or dry
Cream cleanser, hydrating serum, richer moisturizer, mineral SPF. If I’m bringing you back onto retinol, I’ll usually have you restart slowly. Two nights a week often beats seven irritated nights.
If you add LED light therapy to your facial, I’ll guide you on timing. LED sessions run 10 minutes and cost $50 to $200, and I use it to support healing and calm inflammation, acne, and signs of aging.
Redness, flaking, and “is this normal?”: when to text me
A little pinkness right after a facial is common, especially if we did extractions or deeper exfoliation. Mild flaking can also happen after resurfacing or peel-style services. What I don’t want is you sitting at home guessing.
- Usually normal: mild redness that settles within a day, a tight feeling that improves with moisturizer, light flaking.
- Reach out right away: persistent redness that keeps getting worse, significant swelling, blistering, pus, increasing tenderness, or anything that feels like an infection.
"The treatment itself was comfortable, with just mild redness afterward that faded within a day and Rita made sure to explain every step."

Side note: If you found me searching for permanent makeup near me, microblading, or ombre powder brows near me, you’re in the right place for beauty that looks clean and intentional. Just keep facial aftercare separate from permanent makeup aftercare, since the rules and timelines are different.
Facial aftercare FAQs I get all the time in Walnut Creek
Can I wear makeup after a facial?
I recommend waiting at least 24 hours, and up to 48 hours if your skin is red, freshly extracted, or feeling sensitive. Makeup can trap bacteria and heat, and it’s one of the easiest ways to turn a fresh facial into congestion. If you have an event, keep it light, use clean brushes, and remove it gently that night.
How soon can I exercise after my facial?
I generally recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before intense workouts, hot yoga, saunas, or anything that makes you sweat heavily. Heat and sweat can prolong redness and trigger irritation. A light walk is usually fine.
Is it normal for my skin to be red or flaky after a facial?
Mild redness right after your appointment is common, and it often calms down within a day. Light flaking can happen if we did deeper exfoliation or a peel-style service. What’s not normal is redness that intensifies, significant swelling, blistering, or signs of infection. If you’re unsure, reach out so I can guide you.
When can I use retinol or an AHA/BHA again after a facial or peel?
After a standard facial, I usually have you wait several days before restarting retinol or acids, and longer if your skin is dry or reactive. After peels or microchanneling, the timeline can be stricter. I’ll tell you exactly when to restart and how to ramp up slowly so you keep results without irritation.
Can I get a facial if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Often, yes. I’ll keep product choices pregnancy-conscious and skip ingredients that aren’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Let me know you’re pregnant or nursing when you book so I can plan a gentle service and confirm what you’re currently using at home.
